Okay, since I don’t usually paint nudes, this painting probably needs some explanation. I am comfortable with the figure and draw from a model about three times a week, however when I paint people it is usually with clothing as I love the colors, patterns and shapes that this affords me.
So why this painting? I am part of a group of painters, and someone came up with the idea to work from each others paintings as an inspirational starting point. Each month we get a new painting from one of the group, and paint a painting to whatever inspires us. Well, this month I got a painting from Aki Hill of a fig and a peach.

This is a very nice painting, but how was I inspired, and what would I paint? I thought about going out and buying some figs and doing a still life, but there were no fresh figs in the store this week. Besides, does this really say something about me? I loved the purples and yellows in this painting, and the fig did remind me of a plump thigh of a woman …. so hence, my painting titled “Woman as Peach and Fig.” I felt it needed to be simple to reflect Aki’s painting, using some purples, oranges and yellows so I refrained from patterning the simple pose.
